Northern lights!
Last year I was reading about New Year celebrations around the world. Greenland celebrates New Year differently to what we and the majority of the world do, so I read more about it, realised a new airport in Nuuk had opened and tracked the flight prices.
When we arrived we became a bit sceptical that it wasn’t going to be what I read. Everything, and I really mean everything, shuts by 2pm New Years Eve. No shop, cafe, bar is exempt from that. 31st December and 1st January are public holidays and family time.
The amount of fireworks that have gone off over the last few days is astonishing. Each business sets them off as they finish work. The queue in the shopping mall to buy them has been long.
But at 9pm Greenland time, which is midnight in Denmark, the real display starts. We have never seen anything like it, the fireworks went off for over 20 minutes. All set off by families, it was mesmerising. This is Greenland celebrating the end of 2025. I love that they separate the end from the beginning.
We knew tonight was our best shot at seeing the Northern Lights again so we went to the spot we’d been told about in greenlandtravel. Just as the 10pm fireworks were being set off to celebrate Faroe Islands new year (and the U.K.!) they appeared and we were treated to natures own light show. Seeing the green move across the sky with our own eyes is magical. It transfixes you. As texts from loved ones back in the U.K. came through we were celebrating Greenland style.
We were back on our street for the main event at midnight. We wondered if they had any fireworks left and thought it couldn’t possibly be as big as the 9pm display. But we were wrong. The midnight display went on for over half an hour, the streets were filled with happy people celebrating the start of 2026. It was captivating.
What I had read about New Year in Greenland didn’t do justice to what it’s actually like. I love celebrating the end of one year and the start of the next at slightly different times and it’s something that I’ll do forever. We can’t recommend visiting Greenland enough, especially at this time of year!

Welcome to Nuuk, the world’s northernmost capital, where raw Arctic beauty meets a vibrant, modern culture. Set against a backdrop of fjords, mountains, and icy waters, Nuuk feels both remote and alive, a place where nature isn’t just nearby, it’s part of everyday life.
Colorful houses dot the shoreline, local art and music reflect deep Inuit heritage, and the surrounding wilderness offers chances to spot whales, hike dramatic landscapes, or witness the northern lights dancing overhead. Nuuk is not about excess or crowds, it’s about scale, silence, and connection. For travelers seeking something meaningful, untamed, and unforgettable, Nuuk delivers an experience found nowhere else on Earth.

The most heart-pounding drone flight of the year, and my favorite shot of 2025 🧊🇬🇱
You might remember this ice arch from Greenland. It was one of many highlights of last season’s sailing expedition in Scoresbysund, East Greenland.
Next year, I’m heading back. But this time, you can join me.
This July, I’m joining forces with my friend joe_shutter and greatexped for a magnificent 14-day sailing expedition from Svalbard to Greenland.
We’ll be living aboard the S/V Linden, navigating the world’s most remote fjord systems with a small group of just 12 people. Joe and I will be guiding the whole way, and for those interested, I’ll be teaching drone photography to capture those landscapes from above.
If you’ve ever wanted to do the Arctic the proper way, this is it 🤝🏼
Comment “arctic” and I’ll send you the info so you can join us on this expedition ⛵️❄️
Big recap from Greenland. Got bored yesterday!

Wrapped up a year of Nomad Greenland moments.
As 2025 comes to a close, we’re grateful for everyone who travelled with us and chose to spend their time at Camp Kiattua and Saqqaq. Your presence shaped this year more than the landscapes ever could.
Here’s to another year of shared moments and unhurried days in the Arctic, we can’t wait to host you!

sailed from Nuuk to the abandoned village of Qooqqut, fished redfish in Greenlandic waters, and had it cooked for us in a ghost village restaurant.
Doesn’t get more surreal than this and one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments.
