📍GREENLAND — suddenly everywhere in the news.
So here’s something wild most people don’t know.
This ice is perfectly clear—and it has nothing to do with temperature, oxygen, or “pure water.”
Glacial ice forms when snow builds up and gets compressed over hundreds to thousands of years. That pressure slowly squeezes out air bubbles and impurities. With no trapped air, light doesn’t scatter… so the ice turns crystal clear.
Cloudy ice = fast freezing + trapped air
Clear ice = slow time + massive pressure
Some of the ice you can literally pick up in Greenland fell as snow before modern civilization existed.

Die Presse überschlägt sich gerade: Herr Trump möchte Grönland besitzen. Tja, ich war im Sommer 2024 selbst dort und kann nur sagen: Ich verstehe ihn! 😂 Wer will dieses Paradies nicht haben?
Bevor dort der erste goldene Tower steht, solltet ihr das echte Grönland erleben. Ich habe mir die Insel genauer angesehen (und viele Fotos mitgebracht 📸):
🧊 Gänsehaut-Faktor: Der Eisfjord bei Ilulissat ist gigantisch. Wusstet ihr, dass der Eisberg, der die Titanic versenkte, höchstwahrscheinlich genau von hier stammte? Ein Ort voller Geschichte und gewaltiger Naturkraft.
🦊 Wildnis pur: Mein persönliches Highlight war die Eqi Lodge direkt am Gletscher. Wenn man morgens mit Kaffee auf der Terrasse sitzt und dem Eis beim Kalben zuhört… unbeschreiblich. Mit etwas Glück (so wie wir!) schaut sogar ein kleiner Polarfuchs vorbei.

Pipaluk Just Wants to Be Left Alone, 2026 🇬🇱 Big hello to all the Greenlanders and Kalaallit folks! Every person from Greenland who’s reached out over the years has been an absolute delight, and while I refuse to apologize for the actions of the nutjob in charge of the place I live, I do feel the need to say that the vast majority of people in this country respect your autonomy, sovereignty and have no interested in being anything other than friendly neighbors and allies!
This is Nuuk, the capital of Greenland and one of the world’s most remote cities, home to around 20,000 people — more than a third of Greenland’s total popularion 🇬🇱
Its setting is quite spectacular; Nuuk is spread across a rocky outcrop on Greenland’s southwest coast, surrounded by dramatic granite peaks at the entrance to one of the largest fjord systems on Earth.
Since the opening of its new airport in November 2024, Nuuk has become the main international gateway to Greenland, served by regular year-round flights from both Denmark and Iceland.
We had just 24 hours here before continuing our journey north to Ilulissat, but we found Nuuk a pleasure to explore — an ideal place to begin our Greenland adventure, and a fair bit larger than we’d imagined.

• Stop by the Myggedalen viewpoint
• Take a stroll along the Nuuk boardwalk
• Lunch at Cafe Esmeralda
• Check out the Katuaq Cultural Centre
• Have a local beer at Daddy’s

And if you have time, definitely take a boat tour on the Nuuk fjord.

Everyday life at the edge of the ice.
Small houses. Long distances. And paths carved slowly through snow, day after day.
In East Greenland, villages are shaped by winter – not roads. What looks quiet is often full of movement, memory, and routine.
🏠 Local insight: In winter, many paths between houses are packed by foot, sled, or snowmobile – not cleared. These informal routes often reveal the safest and most used ways through town.
💡 Travel tip: If you’re visiting a settlement in winter, follow existing tracks and give people space. Snow-covered ground may hide steep drops, ice, or private areas.

Flying over Greenland at night, I looked out the airplane window and saw for the first time the Northern Lights dancing across the sky in glowing shades of green.
Watching it from above the clouds was unreal, quiet, powerful, and unforgettable. A rare night flight view of one of nature’s most incredible phenomenon, right over the Arctic.
