Drum dance is one of East Greenland’s oldest living traditions – where rhythm, movement, and storytelling come together as one.
💡 Fun fact: The drum dance was traditionally used to resolve conflicts, tell stories, and pass on history. Instead of arguments, people would drum and dance – letting skill, humour, and presence speak for themselves.
💡 Visitor tip: If you’re invited to a drum dance, watch closely. Every movement has meaning, and the songs often tell personal or local stories. Applause comes after the performance – never during.
A powerful reminder that culture here is not something frozen in the past, but very much alive.

Views of the Ilulissat power plant, our hotel (hotelarctic), and Disko Bay from our first hike along the yellow trail. The yellow trail is the shortest (6 km) of the 3 trails around the icefjord and runs between the icefjord center/old heliport and the power plant. The hikes are identified by color (red, yellow, blue) and the “trail” is really just charting a course from point to point by identifying the boulders with yellow dots painted on them.

Carving a tupilak.
Once created as a powerful spiritual object, the tupilak has evolved into one of Greenland’s most iconic art forms. Today, it’s carved from materials like bone, antler, driftwood, or stone – each piece shaped by hand, patience, and deep knowledge of tradition.
💡 Fun fact: Today, beautifully carved tupilak are sold in souvenir shops as a talisman of good luck, but originally, those spiritual creations were designed and brought to life by shamans to harm another person. Through international interest and attention during the colonial times, artists started to create visible artworks for curious visitors.
💡 Visitor tip: If you buy a tupilak in East Greenland, ask who made it and from which material. Each carving carries the maker’s personal style – no two are ever the same.
