Tasiilaq in Grönland 🇬🇱
ln diesen Stunden läuft der politische Showdown um Grönland. Man darf vermuten, dass sich die Freude bei den Bewohnern über die neuerliche Aufmerksamkeit der Weltöffentlichkeit in Grenzen hält: Bislang war die Insel wenig präsent – weder politisch, noch ökonomisch.
Wohl ist die größte, aber zugleich auch bevölkerungsärmste Insel der Welt für ihre rauen Landschaften, die Kälte und ihre faszinierende Tierwelt bekannt. Daher möchte ich Euch in dieser Woche einige Aufnahmen dieser tollen Gegend zeigen, welche ich im Sommer 2008 gemeinsam mit meiner Familie und Freunden besucht habe. Und ganz stark hoffen, dass dieser politische Spuk bald ein Ende findet 🇬🇱✌🏻.
Zu sehen ist hier Tasiilaq, mit rund 2.000 Einwohnern die größte Stadt Ostgrönlands. Die Siedlung liegt strategisch an der zerklüfteten Ostküste, nahe wichtiger Nordatlantik-Routen, die zunehmend an Bedeutung gewinnen – nicht zuletzt durch den Rückgang des Meereises.
Für uns Zentraleuropäer war vor allem die Mitternachtssonne ein unvergessliches Erlebnis: Zwischen etwa Ende Mai und Ende Juli geht die Sonne hier nie vollständig unter und bleibt Tag und Nacht sichtbar – ein stilles, fast surreales Licht, das diese Landschaft noch einmal ganz anders wirken lässt.

Greenland certainly isn’t the cheapest of travel destinations, but is it worth it? Absolutely. And with some careful planning, you can do it without breaking the bank.
Here’s what we spent on our week-long trip (including a night on either side in Copenhagen) 🇬🇱⬇️
✈️ GETTING THERE
– Return flights from London Stansted to Copenhagen w/ Ryanair (incl. checked baggage): £112.96 per person
– Return flights from Copenhagen to Ilulissat (incl. one-night layover in Nuuk) w/ Air Greenland: £637.30 per person
Flights total = £750.26 per person
🛏️ ACCOMMODATION
– 2 nights at Absalon Hotel in Copenhagen (one night at start and one night at end of trip): £253
– 1 night at Kulukis Downtown Hostel in Nuuk: £82
– 6 nights at Paa & Jannik B&B in Ilulissat: £728.02
Accommodation total = £531.51 per person
🛷 ACTIVITIES
– Iceberg boat cruise on the Ilulissat Icefjord: £70.76 per person
– Dog sledding tour from Ilulissat (2 hours): £174.32 per person
(We also did several things that were completely free!)
Activities total = £245.08 per person
🍽️ FOOD & DRINK
– Supermarket groceries & snacks: £130.64
– Meals & drinks out: £411.03
Food & drink total = £270.84 per person
🚖 OTHER TRANSPORT
– Taxi journeys in Nuuk (to/from airport): £32.40
– Metro journeys in Copenhagen (to/from airport at both ends of the trip): £27.04
Other transport total = £29.72 per person
💷 OVERALL TOTAL = £1874.40 per person for the entire trip
Costs will of course vary depending on the time of year, but this should give you a rough idea of what to expect for a week-long trip!

Fresh fish for our 31 dogs🐕🇬🇱
Here in Greenland, we help each other – it’s part of who we are. It’s our culture, and it’s the true Greenlandic spirit🇬🇱✊🏽
Today we received a call from our friends at the harbor who had a lot of fish leftovers for our dogs. They know we have 31 strong sled dogs, and that means a lot to us.
We often receive food from friends after their catch, and we are deeply grateful every single time. This kind of support and community means everything.

Life as a hunter is hard.
Ikuo Oshima grew up in Tokyo and visited Greenland in the 1970s. He never left and became a hunter. When I asked him how he learnt the skills of hunting he just looked at me with a twinkle in his weathered eyes and said "The first ten years were very hungry."
His daughter Toku is a rarity in Greenland, a female hunter.

To give you an idea of what life on expedition actually looks like, I’ve put together a collection of 20 shots from my time in Greenland last season. Swipe through to see the perspective we’ll be chasing.
Next summer, from July 27th to August 10th, 2026, I’m co-hosting a 14-day sailing expedition across some of the most remote waters on the planet. We are sailing from the rugged peaks of Svalbard all the way to the untouched fjord systems of Northeast Greenland.
Our home will be the S/V Linden, a magnificent 50m (150ft) tall ship. No signal, no notifications, no distractions. Just the sound of the wind, the crack of ancient ice, and the massive silence of the high Arctic.
I’m joining forces with joe_shutter and greatexped to guide a small crew of just 12 people through this remote wilderness. Joe and I will be guiding the whole way, and for those interested, I’ll be teaching drone photography to capture those landscapes from above.
This is a level of exploration that very few people on earth will ever get to witness. If you’ve been waiting for that one “once-in-a-lifetime” journey, this is it.
