Every iceberg becomes a stage, waiting for its curtain of light.
Part 2 — Searching for the Perfect Iceberg
Afternoons and twilight are spent navigating through fields of icebergs, scouting for the perfect one. The search is slow and deliberate. We look for shapes that stand out — a curve, a ridge, a translucent arch — and for intricate ice patterns that can form an interesting foreground once the sky ignites.
Experience has taught us that the aurora often forms an oval arch of light. In Northern Norway, it tends to appear toward the north when the activity is low. Yet, here in Scoresbysund, East Greenland, the same phenomenon reveals itself toward the southeast.
This subtle difference allows us to anticipate where the aurora will move — often sweeping from southwest to northeast. With this knowledge, we can choose our iceberg carefully, aligning it with the sky’s expected motion. The goal is to find a composition where the aurora’s glow crowns the ice, where earth and sky merge in one luminous moment.

Visiting Greenland was a dream come true, and seeing icebergs up close was breathtaking. Most Atlantic icebergs originate from Greenland`s ice sheet, taking years to reach Canada`s east coast. I`d seen older icebergs in Newfoundland, weathered by the sea, but these were different. The vibrant blues were unlike anything I`d ever seen – shades so deep my eyes couldn`t fully grasp them. The colour has a depth that`s hard to put into words. Capturing their scale is nearly impossible; they loom like skyscrapers, a mix of soft and jagged edges. And they`re alive, constantly shifting, cracking, and groaning. The sounds of the ice are incredible. But the ice sheet is receding at an alarming pace, faster than expected due to climate change. The changing ice is impacting biodiversity and life in the arctic. I know that what we saw on this trip will not be around forever. If you have the chance to visit Greenland, take the opportunity.
