Long before Christmas lights, the shortest day of the year was the highlight of winter – a celebration of renewal and togetherness. It was a day of renewal. Everyone wore new clothes, shared the best local food, and gathered in warmth and good company as a sign of brighter days ahead. Today, in Tasiilaq, the sun rises for just 3 hours, while in Ittoqqortoormiit, the polar night continues. The sun won’t return this far above the Arctic Circle until around January 19th.
